Pear midge

The Pear midge (Contarinia pyrivora) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a highly specialized insect that targets pear trees, causing significant economic losses in commercial orchards and private gardens alike. Its name comes from the characteristic gall-like swellings that develop on infested pear fruits.

This pest exclusively attacks pear trees. The larvae cause severe damage to the fruitlets, leading to abnormal growth and premature fruit drop. In cases of high infestation, a significant percentage of the potential crop can be destroyed, as infested pears become deformed, rot from the inside, and are completely unsuitable for storage or consumption.

The life cycle of the pear midge is tightly linked to the phenology of the pear tree. The insect undergoes a single generation per year, overwintering as mature larvae in cocoons within the soil under the tree canopy. As spring approaches, pupation occurs, and adult midges emerge synchronously with the opening of pear flower buds.

After mating, females lay eggs inside the floral buds using a needle-like ovipositor. Once the larvae hatch, they feed on the internal tissues of the young ovary, creating a hollow chamber filled with frass. In early summer, the larvae exit the damaged fruit, drop to the ground, and bury themselves in the soil to enter a state of diapause until the following spring.

Effective control strategies require an integrated approach:

• Cultivation of the soil under the trees during autumn and early spring to destroy overwintering cocoons.
• Systematic collection and destruction of infested fallen fruit before the larvae leave them to pupate in the soil.
• Application of systemic insecticides specifically at the "white bud" stage to control adults before egg-laying is completed.
• Monitoring population levels using pheromone traps to determine the exact timing for protective treatments.
