Description
The lily gall midge (Contarinia quinquenotata) is a highly specialized pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. This tiny insect is a significant threat to lily cultivation, as its larvae feed specifically on the developing floral parts of the plant, causing substantial economic and aesthetic damage.
The host range is limited to species and cultivars of the genus Lilium. Gardeners often notice the damage when the plants are in the budding stage. Since the midge is host-specific, infestations are most common in areas where lilies are grown continuously or in close proximity, allowing the population to thrive and spread throughout the garden.
The life cycle of the midge is strictly synchronized with the lily's phenology. Adults emerge in late spring just as the flower buds begin to form. Females insert their eggs directly into the unopened buds using an ovipositor. The larvae hatch inside the protective environment of the bud, feeding on internal tissues until they are ready to pupate.
The primary symptom of an infestation is the deformation of the buds. Affected buds become swollen, asymmetrical, and often fail to open properly. Over time, they may turn yellow, wither, and drop prematurely. Inside these distorted buds, one can find numerous small, whitish to yellowish larvae that destroy the internal structures of the developing flower.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. The most critical practice is the early detection and removal of damaged, swollen buds before the larvae escape into the soil to pupate. Additionally, systemic insecticides applied during the early budding phase can significantly reduce pest pressure, while fall soil cultivation helps disrupt the overwintering pupae.
