Description
The sunflower midge (Contarinia schulzi) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests of sunflowers in North America, capable of causing significant yield losses by targeting the reproductive structures of the host plant.
This pest exclusively attacks sunflower plants, specifically the developing flower heads. Female midges lay eggs within the bracts of the sunflower bud. The feeding activity of the larvae disrupts the normal development of the flower head, preventing proper seed filling and often resulting in total crop failure if infestation levels are high.
The life cycle of Contarinia schulzi is highly synchronized with the growth stages of the sunflower. They typically overwinter as larvae or pupae in the soil. As temperatures rise, adults emerge to mate and start the infestation cycle. Multiple generations can occur during a single growing season, often leading to cumulative damage.
The primary symptom of damage is the distorted, "twisted" appearance of the flower head. Infested heads often fail to bloom correctly, and damaged tissues become necrotic, frequently leading to secondary infections by fungi or bacteria. The physiological stress caused by larval feeding significantly reduces the seed yield and quality.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate the population buildup of the midge:
