The grape blossom midge (Contarinia viticola) is a small insect classified within the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. The primary host for this pest is the cultivated grapevine. The insect shows a distinct preference for young, developing tissues, particularly floral buds. Its presence is most noted in vineyard environments where the conditions allow for overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

The biological cycle of this midge involves multiple stages including egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs into the clusters of the vine. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the floral structures, which effectively stunts the growth of the flower parts and leads to a decrease in fruit set.
