Spectacle Moth

The Spectacle Moth (Cornutiplusia circumflexa) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is widely recognized for its destructive potential in various agricultural systems, particularly in warmer climates where it can thrive as a polyphagous insect.

This pest affects a diverse range of host plants, causing severe yield losses in both commercial crops and vegetable gardens. Key crops at risk include potatoes, tomatoes, brassicas, legumes, and sunflowers. Due to its wide host range, it is considered a persistent threat that requires constant surveillance throughout the growing season.

The biology of Cornutiplusia circumflexa involves a complete metamorphosis cycle, consisting of the egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. The adult moths are nocturnal, and females lay their eggs on the underside of host plant leaves. Depending on environmental conditions, multiple generations can occur annually, leading to rapid population growth in favorable weather.

The damage caused is primarily attributed to the larvae, which are voracious feeders. Early instars typically cause leaf skeletonization, while later stages consume entire leaves, leaving only main veins. This defoliation severely impacts the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to stunted growth, reduced fruit quality, and potentially total crop failure if infestation levels are high.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for effective control:

• Deep autumn plowing to disturb and destroy pupae overwintering in the soil.
• Strict weed control to eliminate alternative food sources for the moth.
• Application of microbial insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, during the early larval stages.
• Use of chemical insecticides only when economic thresholds are exceeded, ensuring rotation to prevent resistance.
• Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity and time intervention efforts precisely.
