Corvid birds

The genus Corvus, part of the order Passeriformes and family Corvidae, includes crows, rooks, and ravens, which are recognized as significant pests in modern agriculture. These birds are highly intelligent, opportunistic foragers that frequently congregate in large numbers on agricultural land, posing a serious threat to crop establishment and production.

Corvids target a wide range of crops, including maize, sunflowers, wheat, barley, and various vegetables. Their feeding behavior often leads to the destruction of germinating seeds and young seedlings. In later stages, they cause mechanical damage to ripening cobs and heads, which leads to direct yield loss and increased vulnerability of the crop to secondary pathogens.

The biological success of these birds lies in their adaptability, complex social structure, and omnivorous diet. They typically nest in wooded areas near farmland and fly out in foraging parties. Their breeding season and subsequent post-breeding period coincide with critical stages of crop development, forcing them to rely on agricultural fields as primary food sources.

The economic impact of Corvus species is substantial, primarily due to the reduction in plant density. By digging up seeds and pulling out seedlings, they significantly reduce the efficacy of sowing operations. Furthermore, their presence on the field often disrupts the growth environment and introduces contaminants, affecting the quality of the harvested produce.

To mitigate the impact of corvids, farmers implement a multi-faceted approach to pest management:

• use of bio-acoustic bird scarers that broadcast distress calls;
• installation of visual deterrents like effigies of predators and reflective tape;
• application of bird-repellent seed treatments with bitter-tasting or irritant compounds;
• timely sowing and deep drilling of seeds to reduce accessibility;
• managing surrounding habitat to discourage nesting and roosting near fields.
