Description

Corylobium is a genus of aphids within the family Aphididae, known primarily for its impact on plants belonging to the Betulaceae family. These small insects are significant pests for hazelnut (Corylus) orchards, where they establish colonies that can jeopardize the health and productivity of the trees.

The primary host plants for this pest include wild and cultivated species of hazelnut. The aphids prefer the soft tissues of new shoots and the underside of leaves, where they feed by piercing the plant epidermis and extracting phloem sap. This feeding behavior drains the plant of essential nutrients needed for proper development and fruit yield.

The life cycle of Corylobium involves both sexual and asexual generations. The aphids typically overwinter as eggs, which are deposited in bark crevices or near bud scales. As spring temperatures rise, these eggs hatch, and the population begins to multiply rapidly through parthenogenesis, leading to multiple generations throughout the growing season.

Symptoms of infestation include curled, chlorotic, and distorted foliage. A major secondary effect is the secretion of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This fungal growth physically blocks light from reaching the leaves, further exacerbating the damage to the plant's photosynthetic capacity and lowering overall tree vigor.

Management strategies should focus on an integrated approach. This includes monitoring for early signs of infestation and encouraging natural predators such as lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps. If chemical control becomes necessary, application of systemic insecticides during the early stages of the infestation provides the most effective protection for the canopy.
