Coscinoptycha is a genus of moths belonging to the family Tortricidae. The species Coscinoptycha improbana is particularly notable in agronomy for its role as a pest of fruit trees. It is primarily recognized for its impact on mango orchards, where it acts as a major threat to crop quality and overall yields in affected production zones.
The primary host for this pest is the mango tree (Mangifera indica). The larvae are known to feed on both vegetative parts, such as leaves and shoots, and reproductive organs, specifically the developing fruits. This feeding habit causes direct financial losses for producers, as damaged fruits are typically discarded or downgraded in quality.
The life cycle of the moth proceeds through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are generally deposited on the surface of leaves or young fruits. After hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding, often spinning silk to tie leaves together or create galleries in the fruit, which provides them with a sheltered microenvironment that protects them from external threats.
The damage caused by Coscinoptycha is characterized by tunneling in the fruit tissue, which facilitates the entry of secondary pathogens, leading to rapid decay. On leaves, the damage manifests as irregular mining or skeletonizing. Severe infestations can cause leaf drop and prevent the proper maturation of the fruit, directly impacting the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring populations with pheromone traps is essential for timing interventions. Cultural practices, such as pruning and the prompt removal and disposal of infested fruit, are critical to reducing the localized population.
