Description
Systematic position. The sedge leafminer (Cosmopterix attenuatella) is a member of the order Lepidoptera, belonging to the family Cosmopterigidae. These small moths are well-known for their specialized behavior of feeding within the leaf tissues of their host plants during their larval stage.
Host plants. This pest primarily targets plants within the family Cyperaceae, specifically species of the genus Cyperus (sedges). While they are often associated with wild weeds, they can cause economic damage in areas where sedge crops or related ornamental plants are grown commercially.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four main stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay their eggs on the surface of the leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the leaf epidermis. They complete their larval development inside these mines, often pupating within the same structure before emerging as adults.
Nature of damage and pest status. The damage is characterized by distinct, winding or blotch mines on the foliage, which are created as larvae consume the mesophyll tissue. This destruction reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, leads to premature leaf senescence, and can significantly stunt growth in cases of severe infestation.
