Sweet potato leaf miner

The sweet potato leaf miner (Cosmopterix dulcivora) is a moth species belonging to the family Agonoxenidae. As an agricultural pest, it is specifically recognized for its impact on sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cultivation. While often referred to as a leaf miner, its larvae are particularly destructive to the tubers and stems, causing severe agricultural damage.

The primary host for this pest is the sweet potato. Because the larvae spend most of their life cycle mining within the tubers, they remain protected from environmental stressors and conventional pesticide applications. The pest is particularly problematic in tropical regions where sweet potatoes are cultivated year-round, allowing for multiple overlapping generations.

The biological cycle begins when adult moths deposit eggs on the surface of the plant tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the tuber or stem. These larvae are small and cylindrical, feeding voraciously on the parenchyma tissues. After passing through several larval instars, they pupate within the galleries created inside the host plant or occasionally in the soil surrounding the plant.

The economic impact of Cosmopterix dulcivora is significant. The tunnels created by the larvae serve as entry points for various pathogens, leading to the decay of the tubers. Marketable yields are severely reduced as the internal tissue becomes riddled with holes and excrement, rendering the produce unappealing and structurally unstable for long-term storage.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for managing this pest include:

• Rigorous screening of planting material to prevent the introduction of eggs or larvae.
• Adoption of strict crop rotation cycles to disrupt the pest's reproductive cycle.
• Deep tilling of fields after harvest to expose pupae to predators and desiccation.
• Application of systemic insecticides that are absorbed into the plant tissues, targeting the larvae inside the tubers.
