It is a common misconception to label Cotesia congregata as a plant pest. In agronomy, this species is strictly defined as a beneficial parasitoid wasp. Taxonomically, it belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Braconidae. This species is highly specialized, primarily targeting larvae of the Sphingidae family, such as the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) and the tomato hornworm, which are notorious defoliators of various solanaceous crops.

The life cycle of the wasp is fascinating and highly effective. An adult female deposits dozens of eggs inside the host caterpillar. The developing larvae feed on the host's hemolymph and non-vital tissues.
