The genus Crangon belongs to the order Decapoda and the family Crangonidae. While primarily marine crustaceans, certain species are euryhaline, allowing them to invade brackish river deltas and coastal agricultural zones, where they can interfere with commercial crop production, particularly in flooded rice fields.

These organisms become significant agricultural pests during the initial stages of rice cultivation. As they scavenge for food, they often uproot germinating seeds or graze on the tender roots and shoots of rice seedlings. This behavior creates patchy crop establishment, leading to direct economic losses for farmers.

The biology of Crangon species is characterized by their resilience and ability to thrive in varying water salinities. Their life cycle depends on the specific aquatic conditions of the irrigation system.
