Craspedoxantha
Craspedoxantha
Description
Craspedoxantha is a genus of insects belonging to the family Tephritidae (fruit flies) within the order Diptera. These insects are recognized as specialized pests that primarily target plants within the Asteraceae (sunflower) family, impacting both wild flora and cultivated agricultural crops.
The pest primarily causes damage during its larval stage. Larvae bore into the developing flower heads, consuming the ovaries, ovules, and developing seeds. This activity directly reduces the reproductive capacity of the host plant and significantly lowers the quantity and quality of harvested seeds.
The life cycle of Craspedoxantha follows complete metamorphosis, consisting of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Adults typically lay eggs directly into the flower buds or young inflorescences. The larvae then tunnel into the receptacle, where they complete their development, often leading to secondary infections caused by fungi or bacteria.
Symptoms of infestation include distorted or stunted flower heads, premature flower drop, and a noticeable lack of viable seeds. In high-density populations, the pest can cause substantial economic losses in seed production fields, necessitating regular monitoring during the budding and flowering stages of the host plants.
Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key control methods include:
- Deep cultivation after harvest to destroy overwintering pupae in the soil.
- Strict weed management, particularly removing wild Asteraceae hosts near crops.
- Crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
- Application of targeted insecticides during the peak flight period of adult flies when monitoring indicates the economic threshold has been exceeded.
