Green mirid
Creontiades dilutus
Description
Systematic position. Creontiades dilutus, commonly known as the green mirid, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It is a major agricultural pest known for its significant impact on various cash crops, particularly in regions with warm climates where it can thrive year-round.
Host plants and damage potential. While cotton is the primary host, the green mirid is highly polyphagous and feeds on a wide range of plants, including lucerne, sorghum, legumes, and several horticultural crops. Its ability to utilize various hosts allows it to survive in the ecosystem even when the main crop is absent.
Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle comprises the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically inserted into the soft tissue of terminal shoots or leaf petioles. The developmental rate is strongly correlated with temperature; in optimal conditions, the life cycle completes rapidly, leading to overlapping generations throughout the cropping season.
Nature of damage. Feeding occurs through the piercing-sucking action of the mouthparts, during which the insect injects saliva containing enzymes that cause necrosis and tissue collapse. Key signs of infestation include:
- Abscission of buds and small bolls, which significantly reduces yield.
- Stunting of terminal growth and distortion of leaves.
- Dark necrotic spots on stems that can weaken the plant structure.
Protection measures. Effective management relies on regular monitoring of pest populations using visual sampling or suction traps. Cultural practices, such as managing weed reservoirs and optimizing sowing times to avoid peak pest activity, are fundamental. When necessary, insecticides are applied; however, rotation of chemical classes is essential to manage potential resistance and minimize the impact on beneficial predators that naturally suppress mirid populations.
