Creontiades pallidifer

Systematic position. Creontiades pallidifer is a species of plant bug belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. Known as a significant agricultural pest, this species is characterized by its ability to rapidly adapt to various hosts in warm climates, making it a target for monitoring in major commercial agricultural regions.

Crops damaged. This pest primarily targets cotton plants, causing significant economic damage to fiber production. However, it is also known to infest a variety of other crops, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, soybeans, and several other leguminous species. Its polyphagous nature allows it to migrate between different host plants throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The insect reproduces rapidly in warm conditions, allowing for multiple generations per season. Adults and nymphs generally feed on the tender parts of the plants, such as squares, flowers, and young bolls, where they cause the most significant damage to the plant's reproductive organs.

Nature of damage and pest status. As a sap-sucking insect, Creontiades pallidifer pierces plant tissues with its stylet, injecting enzymes that cause tissue necrosis. Common symptoms include shedding of squares and bolls, deformation of fruit, and stunted growth.
