Green mirid bug

Systematic position: Creontiades pallidus is a member of the Miridae family within the order Hemiptera. Commonly known as a green mirid bug, it is a significant agricultural pest characterized by its polyphagous nature and its ability to inflict damage on various commercially valuable plants.

Host plants: The pest primarily impacts cotton, causing severe yield losses in many cotton-growing regions. Beyond cotton, it is known to feed on a variety of agricultural crops, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and alfalfa, as well as several wild weeds that provide a refuge during the off-season.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Creontiades pallidus comprises the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The species exhibits rapid population growth in warm climates. Both nymphs and adults are highly active, feeding and moving across the crop canopy throughout the growing season.

Nature of damage: These bugs feed by piercing the plant tissue and sucking cell sap. By injecting saliva during the feeding process, they damage sensitive reproductive structures. This often leads to the shedding of flower buds (square drop in cotton) and young bolls, significantly reducing the potential yield and plant productivity.

Control measures: Management of this pest requires an integrated approach. Cultural control, such as the removal of host weeds, is essential to minimize population buildup. Chemical control using insecticides is often necessary when populations exceed economic thresholds, with a focus on timely applications to protect the most vulnerable developmental stages of the crop.
