Grain flat beetle

The grain flat beetle (Cryptolestes capensis) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Laemophloeidae. This small insect is recognized as a major threat to global grain storage facilities, as it is highly effective at infiltrating and colonizing stored agricultural commodities in various climatic zones.

This beetle primarily targets a wide range of stored cereal grains and legumes, including wheat, barley, maize, and rice. It is also frequently found in flour mills and warehouses processing pasta or other grain-based products. High-moisture conditions within the grain bulk provide an ideal environment for rapid population growth and development of the species.

The biology of Cryptolestes capensis is adapted for survival within small crevices and tight spaces. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The flattened shape of both larvae and adults allows them to hide deep inside the structures of storage bins or within the kernels themselves, making detection difficult during the early stages of infestation.

Damage caused by the grain flat beetle is significant, particularly due to the destruction of the grain germ. By feeding on the embryo and the endosperm, the larvae severely reduce the germination potential of seeds and cause substantial weight loss in stored bulk. Furthermore, the presence of these insects facilitates the heating of grain and promotes the growth of toxic fungi.
