Description
The Currant-galeopsidis aphid (Cryptomyzus galeopsidis) is a member of the Hemiptera order and Aphididae family. It is a specialized pest that targets currant bushes, primarily affecting red and white currants by extracting sap from the tender foliage.
This aphid infests the underside of the leaves, causing physiological stress to the plant. Unlike other gall-forming aphids, this species often causes chlorotic (pale) spotting and leaf curling, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity and weakens the bush over successive growing seasons.
The life cycle involves overwintering as eggs on the currant stems. In early spring, the fundatrices hatch and begin to colonize the young leaves. During the summer months, the aphid often undergoes migration to secondary hosts, specifically plants within the Lamiaceae family, such as hemp-nettles, before returning to the currants in autumn.
Damage is typically observed as pale or yellowish spots on the leaves, followed by twisting and curling. Heavy infestations lead to stunted shoot growth and premature leaf drop, which directly impacts the fruit-bearing potential of the plant for the following year due to compromised bud development.
