Currant blister aphid

The currant blister aphid (Cryptomyzus houghtonensis) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest that primarily targets Ribes species, particularly currants. These insects are widely distributed and can cause significant economic loss in berry production by weakening the overall plant vitality.

The biological cycle of this aphid is synchronized with the growth of currant bushes. Overwintering eggs are deposited on the bark near buds. Upon hatching in the spring, the nymphs migrate to the underside of young leaves. They feed by extracting sap, which triggers the plant to develop abnormal cell growth in response to the aphid's saliva.

The most recognizable symptom of an infestation is the formation of blister-like galls on the upper leaf surface. These galls appear as reddish or yellowish swollen spots. As the season progresses, the affected leaves may curl, turn yellow, and wither, ultimately leading to premature defoliation if the infestation remains untreated.

The harmful impact of Cryptomyzus houghtonensis is twofold: direct damage to leaves reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, and indirect stress makes the host bush more susceptible to secondary fungal pathogens and cold injury during the dormant season. This negatively influences fruit development, resulting in smaller and fewer berries per cluster.

Effective management strategies for controlling this aphid species include:
