Systematic position: Cteniza sauvagesi is a species of spider within the Ctenizidae family, commonly referred to as trapdoor spiders. These arachnids are characterized by their sedentary, subterranean lifestyle, and their evolutionary adaptation to constructing sophisticated burrows with camouflaged trapdoors made of soil and silk.

Crops affected: While not a primary agricultural pest causing large-scale crop loss, this species can be an issue for ornamental gardens, nurseries, and botanical collections. Plants that are sensitive to root zone disturbances are the most susceptible to the mechanical impact caused by the construction of these spiders' burrow systems.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Cteniza sauvagesi is almost entirely confined to the soil environment. Adults are long-lived and reside in permanent burrows. The female stays within the burrow to guard the egg sac. These spiders are nocturnal hunters that detect vibrations on the ground surface near their burrow entrance to capture small prey.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The harmful impact is predominantly mechanical. By digging and maintaining their tunnels, these spiders can disrupt the root structure of young ornamental plants and seedlings. This disturbance can create air pockets around the roots, leading to dehydration and increased vulnerability of the plants to soil-borne pathogens and root rot.

Protection measures: Management of this species focuses on habitat disruption. Regular cultivation and deep tilling of the soil effectively destroy the burrows, forcing the spiders to relocate. In professional plant production, if population density is significantly high, targeted soil treatments or the use of biological control agents that target ground-dwelling arthropods can be utilized.
