Ctenoplusia

Systematic position. Ctenoplusia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Noctuidae within the order Lepidoptera. As members of the cutworm or looper complex, these insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests that impact various crops globally due to their high fertility and feeding habits.

Affected crops. These pests demonstrate polyphagous behavior, meaning they feed on a wide variety of plant species. Common host plants include a range of vegetable crops such as lettuce, potatoes, and tomatoes, as well as field crops like soybeans. They can cause severe damage in both protected cultivation systems and open-field agriculture.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult moths are primarily nocturnal, depositing eggs on the underside of foliage. The larvae progress through several instars, with each stage requiring increasing amounts of leaf tissue. Depending on the species and environmental conditions, they may complete several generations per season.

Damage and economic impact. The primary damage is inflicted by the larvae, which consume leaf tissue. Initially, larvae skeletonize the leaves, but as they mature, they consume entire leaf blades, leaving only the main veins. This defoliation significantly reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize, leading to reduced plant vigor, stunted growth, and decreased yield quality.

Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Ctenoplusia. This includes cultural practices like weed management, crop rotation, and soil cultivation to disturb pupation sites. Chemical control involves the application of targeted insecticides, preferably at the early larval stages, or biological agents such as Bacillus thuringiensis.
