Systematic position. The Brown-hooded owlet (Cucullia convexipennis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. This moth species is part of the Cucullia genus, widely recognized in entomology for the distinctive tufts of hair on the thoracic segment, which resemble a hooded cloak.

Host plants. This species primarily infests plants within the Asteraceae family. Gardeners and growers most frequently encounter the larvae on various types of asters (Aster species) and goldenrods (Solidago). These plants serve as both a food source for the larvae and a habitat during the development stage.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths typically emerge in late spring or early summer. Females lay eggs on the leaves or stems of host plants. The larvae undergo several molts before pupating, which usually occurs in the soil, where the insect remains dormant through the winter.

Damage patterns and impact. The larval stage is the most destructive. Caterpillars consume leaf tissue, often leaving skeletonized stems, and feed heavily on buds and flowers. This direct destruction of reproductive parts significantly diminishes the aesthetic and commercial value of ornamental plantings and can stunt the growth of young plants.

Cultural controls include soil cultivation in late autumn to disrupt pupation sites and manually removing larvae from affected foliage during the early morning. Chemical control, using selective insecticides, should be implemented only when scouting confirms that larvae are present in significant numbers, prioritizing products that minimize harm to beneficial pollinators.
