The Lettuce Shark (Cucullia lactucae) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is widely recognized as a pest in horticulture, particularly affecting crops within the Asteraceae family. Its name originates from the unique arrangement of scales on its thorax, which creates a hood-like appearance.
The primary host plants for this species are members of the lettuce family (Lactuca species) and other related weeds or crops. Larvae consume leaves aggressively, which leads to significant aesthetic and economic damage. In commercial vegetable production, even minor infestation levels can lead to the rejection of the produce due to quality standards.
The life cycle of this insect consists of complete metamorphosis. It typically overwinters in the soil as a pupa. Adults emerge in late spring to begin their reproductive cycle.
