Cuerna leafhopper

The genus Cuerna is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Cicadellidae family. These leafhoppers are primarily native to North and Central America, thriving in various habitats. Adults are easily recognized by their distinctively shaped heads and often vibrant, patterned coloration, which helps them blend into their environments while feeding on host plants.

These insects are known to be polyphagous, meaning they have a wide host range. They damage various agricultural crops, including vineyards, fruit orchards, cereals, and various ornamental grasses. Due to their high mobility as adults, they can rapidly spread across large fields, making early detection critical for maintaining crop health and productivity.

The biological cycle consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females insert their eggs into the plant tissue, which can cause minor mechanical damage to leaves and stems. Depending on the species and environmental conditions, they can produce multiple generations per year, with adults often serving as the overwintering stage in debris or protected areas.

The primary damage is caused by the extraction of phloem sap from the plant's vascular system. This feeding behavior leads to yellowing, leaf curling, reduced vigor, and overall stunted growth. Beyond direct feeding injury, Cuerna species are often implicated as vectors for various plant pathogens, including phytoplasmas and viruses, which can cause devastating systemic diseases in crops.

Effective management strategies combine cultural and chemical control methods:
