Western sharpshooter

Cuerna occidentalis, commonly known as the Western sharpshooter, belongs to the family Cicadellidae within the order Hemiptera. This insect is a significant sap-sucking pest that impacts a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops, often causing physiological stress to the host plants during the growing season.

The host range of Cuerna occidentalis is quite broad, encompassing diverse plants such as grapevines, fruit trees, and various ornamental shrubs. By feeding on the xylem sap, the insect disrupts the normal transport of nutrients and water within the plant, which is particularly detrimental to young or recently grafted specimens in nursery settings.

The life cycle of the Western sharpshooter progresses through egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically inserted into the plant tissue, which can cause localized wounding. As the nymphs develop, they become increasingly mobile and move across the foliage, while the adults are capable of flight, facilitating the spread of the infestation throughout the orchard or field.

The damage caused by this pest includes chlorosis, leaf stippling, and eventual necrosis of the foliage. Heavy feeding pressure can lead to stunted growth and reduced fruit quality. Perhaps most critically, these insects can act as vectors for various plant pathogens, contributing to the spread of diseases that cause systemic decline and yield loss in affected plantations.
