The African cunaxa (Cunaxa africana) is a species of mite belonging to the Cunaxidae family within the Trombidiformes order. While many mites in this family are recognized for their predatory behavior, Cunaxa africana can exhibit damaging characteristics in controlled agricultural environments. These mites are equipped with highly specialized mouthparts that allow them to interact with plant surfaces in ways that can negatively impact plant vigor and health.

This pest primarily affects a variety of vegetables, ornamental plants, and greenhouse berries. Its ability to thrive in protected environments such as greenhouses makes it a serious concern for year-round agricultural production. By colonizing the leaves and stems, it can rapidly decrease the quality of crops, often rendering them unsuitable for the market if the infestation remains unmanaged.

The biological cycle of Cunaxa africana includes several stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. The duration of this cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and relative humidity. In high-humidity conditions common in greenhouses, the reproductive rate increases significantly, allowing for the rapid expansion of the mite population throughout the growing season.

Infestation symptoms typically manifest as chlorosis, necrosis, and distortion of leaves or growing tips. By damaging the plant epidermis, these mites inhibit photosynthesis and disrupt the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients effectively. The cumulative impact of these injuries leads to stunted growth, wilting, and potential loss of the entire harvest if the population reaches economic injury levels.
