Description
The Cypress moth (Cupressatia) is a dangerous pest of coniferous plants belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Yponomeutidae. This species specializes in attacking various members of the Cupressaceae family, causing significant damage to both ornamental landscaping and commercial forest nurseries.
The pest most actively targets plants from the genera Cupressus (cypress), Thuja (arborvitae), and Juniperus (juniper). Under conditions of dense planting, the moth can spread rapidly, leading to widespread browning and dieback of young shoots, which drastically diminishes the aesthetic value of the plantings.
The life cycle of the pest is closely synchronized with the seasonal development of the host plant. Females deposit eggs directly onto the scale-like leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the shoots, where they feed on the parenchyma, creating characteristic galleries. Pupation usually occurs within the damaged twigs or in protected crevices on the tree bark.
A hallmark sign of infestation is the gradual yellowing followed by the death of shoot tips. During mass outbreaks, branches become brittle, and the overall vigor of the tree declines significantly. The internal tunneling by larvae disrupts the normal sap flow, making the tree highly susceptible to secondary fungal infections.
Control measures require a comprehensive management strategy:
- Timely pruning and destruction of heavily infested shoot tips.
- Application of systemic insecticides during the peak flight of adults and larvae hatching periods.
- Monitoring of plantings using pheromone traps to time treatments.
- Maintaining plant vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization.
