Sweet potato weevil

The sweet potato weevil (Cylas puncticollis) is a destructive insect species belonging to the Curculionidae family. As a significant agricultural pest, it primarily targets sweet potato crops (Ipomoea batatas). Its presence in a field can be devastating, as it compromises both the yield quantity and the quality of the harvest, leading to severe economic impacts for farmers in its range.

This weevil is a specialized feeder, meaning its survival and reproduction are almost entirely dependent on the Ipomoea genus. The larvae feed on the vines and the storage roots (tubers) of the sweet potato plants. The damage is particularly severe because the insects often remain hidden inside the plant tissues until the infestation reaches critical levels, making early detection a primary challenge.

The lifecycle of Cylas puncticollis consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females bore small holes into the plant tissue to deposit eggs, which are then sealed to provide protection for the developing larvae. The larvae tunnel through the storage roots, consuming the internal starch and creating extensive galleries that effectively destroy the commercial value of the crop.

Damage symptoms are often subtle in the early stages, appearing as small entry holes. However, as the population grows, the internal degradation of the tuber becomes evident. Infested sweet potatoes develop a bitter taste and a distinct odor due to the chemical compounds released by the plant in response to the insect attack, rendering them completely inedible for humans and livestock.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Key strategies include:

• Using clean, certified planting material to prevent initial infestations.
• Implementing crop rotation to break the lifecycle of the weevil.
• Practicing hilling to cover exposed roots and make it harder for females to reach them.
• Removing and destroying all crop debris promptly after the harvest.
• Employing pheromone traps to monitor and reduce adult weevil populations in the field.
