Taxonomically, these organisms belong to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, and the family Cyathostomidae. They are microscopic, specialized parasites that thrive in complex soil-plant interaction environments.

The primary hosts for this pest include various grass species commonly grown for grazing or silage. By infesting the root systems, Cylicocyclus disrupts the plant’s ability to transport nutrients and water efficiently, which is critical for biomass accumulation and overall field productivity.

The biology of Cylicocyclus involves multiple larval stages, with the pathogen oscillating between free-living soil stages and parasitic stages within plant tissues.
