Philippine colugo

The Philippine colugo (Latin: Cynocephalus volans) belongs to the order Dermoptera and the family Cynocephalidae. It is a nocturnal arboreal mammal known for its ability to glide between trees using a specialized skin membrane called a patagium. In agricultural landscapes, it is recognized as a pest species that feeds on valuable tree crops.

The colugo primarily causes damage to orchards and plantations, targeting coconut palms, mangoes, bananas, and papayas. They consume young leaves, buds, flowers, and tender fruits. Intense browsing on terminal buds by these animals can severely stunt the growth of young trees and significantly reduce the overall yield of the plantation.

The biology of the Philippine colugo is strictly arboreal, with animals rarely descending to the forest floor. Females typically give birth to a single offspring, which clings to the mother's fur for an extended period. Because of their cryptic nature and nocturnal habits, these animals are often difficult to track, leading to agricultural damage that can remain unnoticed until substantial symptoms appear.

The typical signs of infestation include chewed leaves, punctured fruit skins, and damaged bark on young branches. The economic impact is twofold: direct loss of harvest due to consumption or destruction of fruit, and long-term tree stress resulting from foliage loss and tissue damage, which makes the trees more susceptible to secondary pest attacks and diseases.

Integrated management measures are essential to minimize the impact of colugos on agriculture. Common strategies include installing metal bands around tree trunks to prevent climbing, deploying ultrasonic deterrents, and using mesh netting to protect high-value trees. In areas where the species is protected, focus is shifted towards habitat management and non-lethal exclusion techniques to keep the population away from commercial crops.
