Prairie dogs (genus Cynomys), members of the Sciuridae family, are considered significant agricultural pests. These rodents primarily threaten grain crops like wheat and corn, as well as forage grasses in grazing lands. Beyond immediate plant consumption, the mounds created during tunnel construction create obstacles for machinery, potentially leading to equipment failure. Furthermore, the loss of vegetation cover due to their activity contributes to wind and water soil erosion, permanently lowering the quality of the land.
