The Painted Lady (scientific name Vanessa cardui, syn. Cynthia cardui) is a migratory butterfly species belonging to the Nymphalidae family. While often admired as a pollinator, it acts as a serious agricultural pest when its larvae occur in massive numbers on various economically important crops.

The larvae, known as caterpillars, cause damage to a wide range of plants, primarily targeting soybean, sunflower, sugar beet, and various legumes. They are polyphagous, meaning they can thrive on many different plant species, making them a recurring threat in agricultural landscapes.

The life cycle involves migration from warmer regions, followed by egg-laying on the leaves of host plants.
