Cyphoderris

Cyphoderris is a genus of insects belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Haglidae. These insects are often referred to as living fossils, maintaining primitive morphological characteristics. In an agronomic context, they function as specific pests primarily found in the mountainous and forested regions of North America, where they interact with local vegetation.

The biology and life cycle of this genus are defined by a nocturnal and secretive lifestyle. Adult males produce acoustic signals (stridulation) to attract mates during the night. The life cycle consists of several nymphal stages, with their development being strictly dictated by ambient temperatures, which generally limits their distribution to specific high-altitude ecological niches.

Regarding agricultural impact, Cyphoderris feeds on various coniferous and deciduous tree species, as well as adjacent herbaceous plants. Both adults and nymphs consume tender bark, developing buds, and young shoots. Although major outbreaks are relatively rare, their feeding activity can cause significant localized damage to young seedlings and nursery stock.

The characteristic damage manifests as irregular ragged edges on foliage and distinct notches or scarring on the bark of young twigs. These feeding sites create physical wounds that serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which can compromise the plant's health and potentially lead to dieback of affected branches.

Control measures rely on an integrated management approach designed to limit pest pressure. Key strategies include:

• Installing physical barriers around young trees to prevent climbing.
• Maintaining clean cultivation to remove debris that provides shelter.
• Applying registered contact or systemic insecticides during peak activity periods.
