Cypridopsis vidua is a species of seed shrimp or ostracod belonging to the family Cyprididae. These microscopic crustaceans are common in freshwater ecosystems worldwide, thriving in stagnant or slow-moving waters. While they are a natural part of the aquatic food web, their presence becomes problematic in controlled agricultural or aquaculture environments when populations explode.

Taxonomically, the species is placed within the order Podocopida. These organisms are characterized by a bivalve-like carapace that encases their entire body. They are generally bottom-dwellers, moving along submerged surfaces with the help of specialized appendages, which allows them to effectively navigate through dense vegetation and sediment layers.

The life cycle of Cypridopsis vidua is highly adapted for rapid proliferation. They exhibit a form of parthenogenesis which allows for exponential population growth in suitable conditions, typically in warm, nutrient-rich water. This high reproductive rate ensures that even small initial populations can quickly dominate a habitat, creating severe pressure on local resources.

In terms of agricultural impact, Cypridopsis vidua poses a significant threat to rice seedlings in flooded fields. They feed on the tender tissues of young plants, damaging the root and stem systems, which stunts growth and reduces crop yields. In aquaculture, they compete for food with fish larvae and can be a nuisance for operators managing fry production ponds.
