Yellow-winged locust

The yellow-winged locust (Cyrtacanthacris aeruginosa) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This large, robust insect is recognized as a significant pest, particularly in African regions, where it displays both solitary behavior and the potential to form damaging swarms that threaten agricultural production.

This species is polyphagous, attacking a wide range of botanical hosts. Primary crops at risk include cereals like maize, sorghum, and millet, as well as various vegetables, cotton, and young fruit trees. Their dietary breadth allows them to thrive in various agro-ecosystems, making them a persistent challenge for farmers throughout their range.

The life cycle of Cyrtacanthacris aeruginosa consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females deposit eggs in the soil, often in protected areas. Upon hatching, the nymphs undergo several instars, feeding voraciously on vegetation. As they molt and grow, their appetite increases, leading to more aggressive feeding behavior that is characteristic of the later stages of their development.

The extent of damage is substantial, with the locusts consuming large portions of leaf tissue, stems, and reproductive structures. Beyond the direct loss of biomass, heavy infestations often lead to secondary infections in damaged plants and severe growth retardation. In high-density events, entire fields can be devastated in a very short period.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Early detection via scouting is essential to identify hotspots. Cultural controls, such as tillage after egg-laying, help reduce the next generation. Chemical interventions using targeted insecticides remain a primary control measure during outbreaks, while bio-pesticides represent a growing area of sustainable research for population management.
