The Tatar locust (Latin: Cyrtacanthacris tatarica) is a prominent member of the family Acrididae (short-horned grasshoppers). It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in various regions, particularly across Africa and parts of Asia, capable of causing devastating damage to vegetation through feeding activities.

Regarding its biology and life cycle, the Tatar locust undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. Females lay egg pods deep in the soil, which hatch into nymphs (hoppers). These nymphs pass through several developmental stages (instars) before reaching adulthood. The adult stage is marked by strong wings that allow for extensive migration when food supplies become depleted.

This species is a generalist feeder or polyphagous insect. It causes substantial damage to a wide range of crops, including cereals such as maize, sorghum, millet, and wheat. Furthermore, it is known to attack vegetable crops, fruit trees, and various grasses, often causing complete defoliation of the infested areas.

The damage caused by these insects is immediate and catastrophic during outbreaks. They consume leaves, stems, and fruits, leading to severe yield losses. High populations can effectively strip agricultural fields bare, leaving plants unable to recover, which threatens food production and causes significant economic losses.
