Systematic position: Cyrtomenus is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cydnidae, commonly known as burrowing bugs. These insects are specialized subterranean pests that spend the vast majority of their life cycle beneath the soil surface, feeding on the root systems of various host plants.

Affected crops: The genus primarily attacks root and tuber crops, causing significant economic losses. Key hosts include potatoes, cassava, onions, garlic, peanuts, and various ornamental plants. In some regions, they are also known to damage the roots and developing stems of young cereal crops, leading to seedling mortality.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Both nymphs and adults live in the soil at depths ranging from 5 to 30 cm depending on soil moisture and temperature. They thrive in loose, organic-rich, and well-drained soils. Reproduction occurs in underground chambers where females may guard their eggs to ensure successful development.

Nature of damage: Feeding occurs via a piercing-sucking mouthpart. As these insects feed on roots and tubers, they create small puncture wounds that often become dark necrotic lesions. These wounds are frequently colonized by secondary pathogens, leading to rot. Consequently, infested plants exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and reduced vigor, often rendering tubers unmarketable.

Control measures: Managing Cyrtomenus is challenging due to its cryptic soil-dwelling nature, requiring an integrated approach:

• Crop rotation with non-host plant species to interrupt the life cycle.
• Deep tillage to disrupt soil habitats and expose insects to predators.
• Application of granular or systemic insecticides during planting to protect the root zone.
• Maintaining optimal soil moisture and weed control to reduce preferred breeding habitats.
