Cystiphora

Cystiphora is a genus of gall midges belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae and the order Diptera. These tiny insects are primarily known for their specialized interaction with host plants, where their larvae induce the formation of galls — abnormal growths of plant tissue that provide both sustenance and protection for the developing larvae throughout their life cycle.

These pests predominantly infest plants within the Asteraceae family. Depending on the species, Cystiphora targets specific weeds or cultivated plants, showing a high level of host specificity. The larvae feed on the internal tissues of leaves or stems, triggering the plant's physiological response which creates the characteristic swellings often observed in infected fields or gardens.

The life cycle begins when an adult female deposits eggs into the tender tissues of a plant. Upon hatching, the larvae secrete specific compounds that manipulate the plant's growth hormones, leading to gall development. The larvae remain enclosed within these galls, protected from the environment, until they complete their development, pupate, and emerge as adults to restart the cycle.

Damage caused by Cystiphora is manifested through the deformation of plant organs and the diversion of nutrients towards the galls. This parasitic relationship suppresses the host plant's vigor, reduces leaf surface area available for photosynthesis, and can cause stunted growth. While often localized, widespread infestations can significantly weaken the plant's structure and overall productivity.

Effective management and protection strategies include:
