Description

It is important to clarify that Dacnusa (such as Dacnusa sibirica) is not a plant pest. Instead, it is a genus of parasitoid wasps belonging to the family Braconidae. These insects are considered essential beneficial organisms in integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for both greenhouse and field-grown crops.

Taxonomically, Dacnusa is classified under the order Hymenoptera and the family Braconidae. They are specialized natural enemies of leaf mining flies (Agromyzidae), which are notorious pests that tunnel through the leaf tissues of various vegetable and ornamental plants.

The life cycle of the Dacnusa wasp is perfectly adapted to target its host. The adult female locates a leaf miner larva feeding within the leaf tissue, uses her ovipositor to insert an egg directly into the host's body, and the emerging parasitoid larva consumes the pest from the inside.
