Dacnusa leptogaster is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the family Braconidae, order Hymenoptera. Unlike pests, this insect is a highly valued biocontrol agent. It acts as a specialized endoparasitoid that targets various species of leafminer flies (Agromyzidae) which are notorious pests in horticulture.
The primary hosts of Dacnusa leptogaster are leafminer larvae that infest a wide range of vegetable and ornamental crops. In protected cultivation environments such as greenhouses, they are particularly effective in controlling infestations on tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and chrysanthemums, where leafminers can cause significant economic damage.
The biological cycle of this parasitoid is synchronized with its host. The female wasp inserts an egg into the leafminer larva as it mines within the plant leaf tissue. The wasp larva then consumes the internal parts of the host, ultimately killing it before it can reach maturity or pupate, thereby preventing the next generation of pests.
