In agronomic practice, it is classified as a beneficial insect rather than a pest, as it serves as a critical biological control agent against dipteran leafminers, specifically those within the Liriomyza genus.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Dacnusa nipponica is strictly dependent on its host, the leafminer larvae. The female wasp inserts its ovipositor into the leaf tissue, placing an egg inside the leafminer larva. The parasitoid larva then develops endoparasitically, feeding on the host's internal tissues, which leads to the eventual death of the leafminer before it can pupate.

Nature of damage and impact. The insect itself does not damage plants. It mitigates the damage caused by leafminers, which bore tunnels (mines) through leaves. These tunnels disrupt the plant's photosynthetic process, reduce vigor, and can cause significant foliage loss. By regulating the population of these pests, the parasitoid prevents yield reduction and maintains plant health.

Crops affected by hosts. Dacnusa nipponica is primarily utilized to protect crops prone to leafminer infestation. These include various solanaceous crops like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, as well as cucurbits like cucumbers and various ornamental species such as gerbera and chrysanthemums grown in greenhouses.
