Olive fruit fly

The Olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae, formerly Dacus oleae) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the Tephritidae family. It is recognized globally as the most serious pest affecting olive trees. Its ability to infest fruits and render them unsuitable for high-quality oil production causes significant economic losses in the Mediterranean and other olive-growing regions.

The host range of this pest is primarily restricted to olive trees (Olea europaea). The insects target both wild and cultivated varieties of olives. Because of the favorable climate in major producing regions, the olive fruit fly can produce several generations per year, making it a persistent threat that requires year-round monitoring and management.

The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females puncture the skin of the olive fruit to deposit their eggs. The emerging larvae feed on the olive pulp, creating tunnels that destroy the fruit's structure. Depending on the generation, pupation can occur either inside the fruit or in the soil, which helps the species survive different environmental conditions.

The damage caused by the olive fruit fly is twofold: direct damage through larval feeding and indirect damage through the introduction of pathogens. Infected fruits often drop prematurely from the tree. The resulting oil quality is severely degraded; it becomes highly acidic and develops off-flavors, often forcing producers to sell the crop at a significantly lower price or discard it entirely.

Effective management strategies for this pest include the following:

• Installation of bait stations and pheromone traps to monitor population levels and suppress mating.
• Application of bait sprays containing protein hydrolysates and low-toxicity insecticides.
• Use of biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps that hunt for fly larvae.
• Cultural practices like early harvesting to avoid late-season infestation peaks.
