Description

The Egyptian fruit fly (Dacus annulatus) is a significant pest belonging to the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. This insect is recognized as a major agricultural threat, capable of causing substantial damage to fruit production in regions with moderate to warm climates where the species thrives.

This pest affects a wide range of agricultural crops, with a particular preference for various succulent fruits. Host plants frequently include citrus species, figs, pomegranates, quinces, and several stone fruits. Its adaptability allows the fly to exploit diverse orchards, moving between hosts throughout the growing season.

The biological cycle of the Egyptian fruit fly is highly efficient under favorable weather conditions. The female uses her ovipositor to pierce the fruit epidermis and deposit eggs inside. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the fruit, feeding on the pulp and creating tunnels that disrupt the internal anatomy of the fruit.

Moreover, the entrance holes created by the female serve as entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, significantly degrading fruit quality and rendering it unsaleable.
