Systematic position. Dacus aspilus belongs to the order Diptera, within the family Tephritidae (fruit flies). Host crops. This species primarily targets members of the family Cucurbitaceae. Crops such as cucumbers, melons, and various related squash species are the main hosts. The fly selects fruits based on the thickness of the rind and the sugar content, which provide optimal conditions for larval development.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult female uses her ovipositor to pierce the fruit's skin and deposit eggs beneath the surface. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the pulp, feeding on the interior tissue. Once mature, the larvae exit the fruit and drop to the ground to pupate in the soil.
