Description
Systematic position. The short fruit fly (Dacus brevis) belongs to the order Diptera, within the family Tephritidae. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its specific feeding habits that directly impact the reproductive structures of host plants, leading to severe economic losses in infested areas.
Crops. This pest primarily targets species within the Cucurbitaceae family. It is particularly damaging to various cucurbits, where the internal structure of the ripening fruit provides a perfect environment for larval development and sustenance throughout their growth stages.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females insert their eggs into the flesh of the fruit using a specialized ovipositor. Upon hatching, larvae feed internally on the pulp, creating galleries that compromise the integrity of the host fruit.
