Dacus ceropegiae

Dacus ceropegiae is an insect species belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae (fruit flies). This pest is known for its impact on various plant species, particularly those that serve as hosts for its larval development. Understanding its systematic position is crucial for developing targeted management strategies in agriculture.

The pest primarily affects crops within the Cucurbitaceae family and other related plant species. The larvae feed on the internal tissues of the fruit, causing significant damage. In areas where these host plants are grown commercially, Dacus ceropegiae can cause severe outbreaks if environmental conditions favor its rapid population growth.

The biological cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female adult uses its ovipositor to pierce the skin of the developing fruit, depositing eggs deep into the flesh. Once hatched, the larvae consume the fruit tissue, causing internal decay and structural damage to the host plant's reproductive organs.
