Description

The Ethiopian melon fly (Dacus ciliatus) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. This insect is a significant agricultural pest known for its ability to devastate cucurbit crop yields, presenting a serious economic threat to commercial horticulture and small-scale farming globally.

The host range of this pest primarily includes members of the Cucurbitaceae family, such as melons, watermelons, cucumbers, zucchinis, and pumpkins. It is highly mobile and can spread rapidly between fields, utilizing various succulent vegetable crops to complete its life cycle throughout the growing season.

The biological cycle consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. The female uses a sharp ovipositor to pierce the rind of the host fruit, depositing eggs directly into the tissue. The larvae hatch and begin feeding on the internal pulp, creating galleries that compromise the fruit's structural integrity and accelerate tissue decomposition.

Damage caused by Dacus ciliatus is severe and often irreversible. Infested fruits show characteristic sting marks, followed by yellowing, sunken necrotic patches, and premature drop. Due to the breakdown of the flesh and the presence of larvae inside, the fruit becomes inedible and completely unmarketable for human consumption.

Effective management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key measures include:

  • Regular monitoring using protein-based baits or pheromone traps.
  • Application of bait sprays during the adult stage before egg-laying occurs.
  • Strict field sanitation by removing and destroying all infested fruits immediately.
  • Post-harvest soil cultivation to disrupt the pupation stage in the ground.
