Congo fruit fly

The Congo fruit fly (Dacus congoensis) is a destructive member of the Tephritidae family within the order Diptera. Recognized as a significant agricultural pest, this species primarily impacts crops in sub-Saharan Africa, where it causes serious economic losses by targeting the reproductive parts of various plants.

This pest is specialized in attacking the Cucurbitaceae family, including various types of melons, gourds, and cucumbers. The larvae feed internally on the fruit pulp, which leads to structural degradation, premature dropping of the fruit, and severe losses in yield quality for commercial growers and local farmers alike.

The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females use their ovipositors to deposit eggs beneath the epidermis of the developing fruit. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel through the fruit, consuming the flesh. Pupation usually occurs in the soil, although it can occasionally take place within the host fruit.

Symptoms of infestation include pin-prick marks on the fruit skin, which are the sites of oviposition. These entry points often become entryways for bacteria and fungi, causing rapid rotting. The internal part of the fruit typically becomes a liquified mass of decaying tissue, effectively rendering the entire crop unmarketable.

• Monitor population levels using pheromone-baited traps.
• Implement strict field sanitation by burying or burning infested fruit.
• Use appropriate insecticides targeting adult flies before oviposition occurs.
• Practice crop rotation to disrupt the lifecycle of soil-dwelling pupae.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Because the larvae remain protected inside the fruit for the majority of their development, timing chemical applications to target the adult stage is critical. Additionally, physical barriers or netting can be used in small-scale cultivation to prevent flies from landing on the fruits.
