Description
Dacus hargreavesi is a species of fruit fly belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. This pest is a significant threat to agricultural productivity in specific regions, primarily targeting soft-fleshed fruits and vegetable crops, causing substantial economic losses for farmers.
The host range of Dacus hargreavesi primarily includes members of the Cucurbitaceae family. Larvae are the primary damaging stage, as they bore into the fruit tissue, feeding on the interior pulp. This activity not only consumes the product but also introduces decay-causing pathogens that render the fruit unsellable.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female uses an ovipositor to insert eggs beneath the skin of the host fruit. After hatching, the larvae go through several developmental instars while inside the fruit. Pupation typically occurs in the soil, which serves as a protective environment for the fly to emerge as an adult.
The damage is characterized by puncture marks on the fruit surface, followed by soft spots and rot. Because the larvae remain hidden inside the fruit throughout their feeding period, early detection is difficult, and by the time symptoms become visible, the internal part of the fruit is often already heavily degraded.
