These insects are well-known as fruit flies, specifically adapted to exploit the tissues of various soft-skinned fruits, making them a significant concern for commercial agriculture in tropical and subtropical regions.

Host crops: This species primarily targets plants within the Cucurbitaceae family. Common horticultural crops such as cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, and squash are highly susceptible to infestation. Because these flies are highly specialized, they can cause localized outbreaks that devastate entire harvests if left unmanaged.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle follows a complete metamorphosis including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females use a sharp ovipositor to penetrate the skin of host fruits and deposit eggs directly into the pulp. The larval development period is fast, and upon completion, larvae drop into the soil to pupate, which is a critical stage for field management strategies.

Damage and economic significance: The primary damage is caused by the larvae feeding internally. They tunnel through the fruit, destroying the pulp and creating entry points for secondary pathogens like bacteria and fungi, which accelerate rotting.
